39.9 million [36.1 million – 44.6 million] people globally were infected with HIV in 2023

According to data provided by the United Nations Joint Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS), in 2023, approximately 39.9 million people lived with HIV globally, with an estimate ranging from 36.1 million to 44.6 million. This figure highlights a persistent reality of the HIV pandemic, stressing the importance of continued efforts to prevent and treat this infection.

Evolution of new HIV infections

In 2023, approximately 1.3 million people were newly infected with HIV, a significant decrease compared to the peak of 3.3 million new infections in 1995. However, this reduction has not yet reached the overall target set for 2025, reducing the annual number of new infections below 370,000. Women and girls accounted for 44% of new infections in 2023, and the reduction in new infections was the largest among children, with a decrease of 62% in 2010 [unaids.gov] [World Health Organization].

AIDS-related deaths

In 2023, approximately 630,000 people died from AIDS-related diseases, a 69% drop from the peak in 2004. Although significant progress has been made, the number of deaths remains far from the goal of reducing the annual death toll below 250,000 by 2025. AIDS-related deaths fell by 56% among women and girls and by 47% among men and boys in 2010 [unaids.gov].

Access to antiretroviral treatment

By the end of 2023, 30.7 million people living with HIV had access to antiretroviral therapy, a significant increase from 7.7 million in 2010. However, the number is still below the target of 34 million for 2025. Access to treatment was unevenly distributed, with 83% of women and 72% of men having access to medicines [unaids.gov].

These data highlight both the progress made in the fight against HIV / AIDS and the remaining challenges. It is essential to continue global efforts to prevent new infections, expand access to treatments and reduce the stigma of people living with HIV. In addition, it is crucial to step up measures to meet the targets set for 2025, including the reduction of new infections and AIDS-related deaths.
