Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anca Pantea Stoian: Diabeta is a unique application in the world

Diabeta was born out of necessity. For us, diabetologists, it is extremely important how we prescribe and in what combination we prescribe antidiabetic therapy, especially when we have to follow prescription protocols. But it was very difficult for me to navigate through all the therapeutic protocols, which were constantly changing, and I no longer knew which was the latest protocol variant that allows me to associate molecules and which does not allow this. I wish I had them all in one place and with a magic wand, someone would instantly update them with what was changing. This is how the idea of developing Diabeta appeared“, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anca Pantea Stoian, scientific coordinator of Diabeta, the entire development process of the chatbot equipped with artificial intelligence.

After processing all the therapeutic protocols for the drugs included in the national diabetes program and the diabetes guide that is in force, the Diabeta chatbot proceeded to learn the manuals for insulin pumps, the materials that diabetologists have at their disposal for initiating the insulin pump and understanding the calculation algorithm.

Now we have together medication, monitoring and treatment tools for the patient with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as diagnostic and management recommendations for the patient with diabetes, in a unique chatbot. At the moment I do not know of any other application of this kind, in the whole world, an application that includes all these components“, added Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anca Pantea Stoian in her intervention.

The development  of Diabeta does not stop here, however, and the latest update brought the option to use the chatbot by voice command. “The voice component is very important, because we hardly write anymore and we just interact with the application verbally. It can tell us exactly whether a particular drug can be associated with the SGLT2 inhibitor, what recommendations and barriers we have in prescribing, what reactions or contraindications exist. It is information related to the diabetes specialty and which we find in a very friendly application and available to all specialists“, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anca Pantea Stoian, during the Diabeta presentation, organized to mark one year since the launch of the chatbot.

The diabetologist also talked about possible additional options that could be included in  the Diabeta chatbot, such as a patient scheduling application or various alerts to alert the doctor, such as a prescription that has not been picked up or a set of tests that have not been performed or are delayed.

I think we have the opportunity to perfect this chatbot and take it to a level that is difficult to reach by other endeavors. I really want to create a community of doctors who do something other than simply prescribe a prescription, and here innovation like Diabeta is a vital tool. I want the New Year, 2024, to mark this improvement of the application, taking it to the level of perfection and thus to become the first and most important working tool of diabetologists and not only, but 100% to the patient’s advantage“, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anca Pantea Stoian, at the end of her intervention.

Diabeta is the first medical chatbot approved by the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices in Romania. This innovative platform brings to the fore an innovative approach to diabetes management, ensuring access to accurate and verified information in real time. Diabeta processes an extensive database of information from official diabetes guidelines and protocols, as well as Feature Summaries of Products used in the National Diabetes Program, to provide quick and accurate answers to questions related to available diabetes treatments. Developed by the Romanian company Apollo AI Technologies, #DIABETA has benefited from the support of prestigious partners such as Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim and Medtronic.
